Online learning is very different from the traditional classroom type of learning and can be challenging for those who don't take the time to properly prepare themselves. The distance learner must be much more self-motivated and self-disciplined than the learner who participates in classes that have the ongoing support of a teacher or a teaching assistant. To be successful at your distance course, it is very important that your home environment be conducive to focused studying. If you have a designated study area in your home that is well-organized, you are much more likely to be successful.
Whether you are studying on a desk top computer, or a laptop computer, it is important that you study in an appropriate area in your home. Studying on your lap while lying on your bed is not the best way to approach an online class. Although many people think that online learning is easier than classroom learning, the opposite can be true. Online classes are challenging. Normally there is a lot of material to be learned independently. If you are not prepared to study at regular intervals throughout the week, and do not have a lot of time to devote to the class, you should think twice about enrolling. Most people participating in online learning have full, busy lives. Online learning is a great thing for those who are working full time or raising a family. But, unfortunately, everyday lives can distract from completing the online course material. For this reason it is important that every minute you spend studying is used wisely. Setting up an office type area somewhere in your home will ensure that you can remain focused on your studying and none of your precious time will be wasted.
Find an area in your home where you can spend time studying without being disturbed. A room with a door that closes is ideal, as you can shut out the demands of the rest of your life. If this is not an option, try to find a secluded corner in your home. If you live in a small open space, a large folding screen may be a good idea as it will block your view of the rest of your living space and keep you focused while you are studying. A desk or table where your keyboard can be put at a comfortable level for typing is essential. A comfortable chair to put at the desk is also very important. You could be spending hours at a time sitting in the chair studying and a good chair will help you avoid back and neck strain. A good light source is also very important for studying during the evening or into the night hours. A bulletin board of some kind, or even a desk top dry erase organizer, will help you to keep track of important due dates and make lists to prioritize your work.
